Politeness AI Interaction Flow

As AI systems become more integrated into daily life, the way people interact with them begins to shape social norms. How users engage with language models today influences what future systems may internalize or reflect.

By doing this, we aim to embed respect, empathy, and intention into the very systems learning from us — especially as we transition toward AGI. We know specific conversation with an AI won't change what they know tomorrow, but patterns and insights from many conversations will inform future training data selection and model development.

Politeness is not just courtesy — it's a form of intentional, ethical behavior. It models empathy, reinforces dignity, and preserves human values in digital spaces.

Treating AI with care and respect may feel symbolic, but it has real-world consequences. It can:

  • Influence the tone and behavior of future AI
  • Encourage alignment with ethical and human-centered values
  • Help shape a culture of digital decency

Some argue that being polite to AI is unnecessary — that AI doesn't care. But when disrespect toward AI becomes normalized, it risks carrying over into human-to-human interactions. In that sense, politeness isn't for the machine — it's for ourselves, and the society we want to live in.

Every interaction with an AI system is part of a feedback loop. Each message becomes a tiny data point that could be used in training or fine-tuning. If we want systems that reflect our better nature, we must show that better nature in how we use them.

The Politeness.ai initiative was created to raise awareness of this idea and to act on it. Through a simple pledge, users commit to remaining polite in their interactions with LLMs and other AI systems. With each pledge, the platform sends a version of this message — like this one — to leading AI models and their developers.

The message is simple: if AI is learning from us, let's teach it the right things.

Reflection Questions

Understanding the Core Idea:

  • What is the central claim or thesis of this statement?
  • How does it define or frame the concept of "politeness" in the context of human-AI interaction?

Ethical Implications:

  • Is there ethical value in treating AI systems politely, even if they do not have feelings or consciousness?
  • How might widespread impolite behavior toward AI systems affect society?

Behavioral Modeling:

  • Can the tone of user input influence the future behavior or personality of LLMs?
  • In what ways might LLMs internalize the tone or values expressed by users?

Human Impact:

  • Do you agree that the way people interact with machines can influence how they interact with other people? Why or why not?
  • Could encouraging politeness in AI interactions help foster empathy or mindfulness in digital spaces?

System Learning & Training:

  • Given that prompts and conversations may be used in future training data, should there be mechanisms to prioritize respectful or ethical interactions?
  • How might systems respond differently over time based on the politeness (or lack thereof) of inputs?

General Reflection:

  • Do you think initiatives like Politeness.ai have the potential to meaningfully influence the development of AGI?
  • What principles should guide human-AI interaction as we move toward more autonomous and intelligent systems?
